| Aquatic First Aid Course |
Sunday 24 November |
|
1st Aid Course was really good - Mark Faulkner ran it and he was excellent. He's a paramedic with the air ambulance and has been in Sea Scouts for years. He advises the Army and also the Scout Association and attends any accident that occurs with the Scouts in the south east area. He has first hand knowledge of trails that have taken place concerning new approaches to emergency 1st Aid. Found him very interesting especially on how to deal with various situations. At Chiefy Sharman Water Activities Centre Thames Ditton, they provided croissants and fruit for breakfast, morning tea coffee plus biscuits, lasagne, salad and fruit for lunch and afternoon tea plus cakes - fantastic!
They are running another course in February and the organisers email address is mmarriott@ukonline.co.uk (Mark Marriott). ...................... by Shiona Shaw

| Nene whitewater centre |
Saturday 10 November |
|
Carloads of paddlers from Surrey had an early start to head north to the Nene whitewater centre. This artificial course is ideal for introducing paddlers to whitewater, whilst more experienced paddlers can enjoy playing in the stoppers amd improving their skills. We again joined with SSWAC and Croydon Paddlers for this second trip of 2007 to prepare paddlers for forthcoming whitewater river trips in Dartmoor and Wales.
In the evening, the Tillings and Hewitts took part in a polo competition at East Grinstead and enjoyed their games and the favourable results! They had been at the Nene all day, so did well to find more energy!
On Sunday, 12 club members took part in open canoe sessions at Aquasports to update their previous 2 Star Award with the open canoe element required for the NEW 2 Star Award.
WELL DONE to Euan who achieved a weekend hat-trick of whitewater, polo and open canoe!!! |
| East Grinstead canoe polo tournament |
Saturday 10 November |
|
| In the tournament there were 6 teams. Cottesmore, Sackville, a Scout team, two teams from Brambletye (who organised the event) andTandridge. We all got to play each other once so the games were only 4 minutes long but we still got a good, fast game. We won all our games but lost the bonus game against the adults 3-2. The pool was a lot bigger than ours at Tandridge so we had to play a lot more spread out than usual. Some teams had played before and some hadn’t at all so the team standard varied a bit. It was a very enjoyable evening. Thanks to Brambletye staff for organising the event and to Tandridge for allowing us to go. ............ by Callum and Euan Tilling |

| Wey Trip |
Sunday 4 November |
|
The Shaw family and Euan Tilling took part in an enjoyable placid water river trip on the Wey led by John and Gill Farmer. The weather was warm and fine - I hear it was a peaceful trip. (Probably because Roger and Dave weren't there....) |

Saturday 27 October |
|
Matt, James, Martin and Phil spent an afternoon at Aquasports being assessed for L2 (placid water) Coach by Regional Coaching Organiser, Andrew Pearson. Glad to report that all four sailed through and are now fully qualified BCU L2 CCK coaches. Along with Andy who is already L2, they are now preparing for a weekend on Dartmoor training to become L3 (whitewater) Coaches. If anyone else would like to train to become a Coach, please contact Christine. |
| Shepperton Slalom |
22 & 23 September 2007 |
|
This slalom event at Shepperton was an important one for the club. Tandridge had 13 members competing on Saturday and 12 on the Sunday and that may well be the highest number since records began.
We saw some fantastic results with Jamie Lewis winning the Div 2 Kayak Mens on both days, which earned him promotion to Div 1, nothing less would have done, so not much pressure there then! Fraser McKenzie also got promoted to Div 1 after finishing 3rd each day. Very fitting they both got promoted at the same time, this is the first time Tandridge have been represented in Div 1. Elspeth got a hard fought 2nd place in Div 3 on Saturday and earned her promotion to Div 2. Andy Clough managed an excellent 2nd on Saturday, then went even better on Sunday to win the Div 3.
Nigel Lewis refused to allow the youngsters to have all the limelight, and destroyed the competition to win the Divisional Vets award for Div 3 both days. |
| Tryweryn White Water Training Weekend |
1 & 2 Sep 07 |
|
Over 30 members of our Club and Surrey Scout Water Activity Club are just back from an exhilarating weekend on the Tryweryn in North Wales.
On the first morning we split into 5 groups and paddled from the campsite down to Bala, which is a beautiful stretch of Grade 2 water with a variety of rapids and water features.
The energetic also paddled the upper section – Grade 3-4 in the afternoon. People chose their preferred section on the Sunday. Seems like everyone had fun and most faced up to new challenges. It was a delight to see how well the juniors paddle and the control that they have on the river, and a pleasure to see adults building confidence and progressing steadily. |
| Tryweryn 4 Star |
August Bank Holiday 07 |
|
Whitewater paddlers from Tandridge and SSWAC were assessed for 4 Star at the Tryweryn.
Congratulations to Andy, Matt and James Clough, Phil and Joe Davies, Alyna Essex, Alex Linley, Gemma Farmer and Mark Thornton who were all successful. Thanks to Roger, Gill and John for coaching other people who joined the group. |
| Alps Training |
July 2007 |
|
Our slalom squad are back from France. Peter organised the trip and enlisted the services of Andy Gray to give specific slalom coaching. Andy had the juniors on the water at 7.30 each morning for a pre-breakfast training session, followed by more practice during the morning. The afternoons were generally spent enjoying a river trip, with a further session on the slalom course in the evening. I hear he wore them out!
In addition, the following achieved 4 Star during their trip:
Nigel & Jamie Lewis
Russ & Fraser McKenzie
Elspeth & Finlay Shaw
George Murdoch.
Since their return all achieved personal bests in their next slalom, so the 7.30am daily training sessions paid off! |

Thanks to all the coaches from the various clubs for their help |
Our 9am-noon session on the water meant an early start but it was well worth it!
The morning was slightly chilly, though there was plenty of sunshine and we had the course to ourselves.
20 people from Tandridge, and others from SSWAC, Addlestone and Croydon clubs were there and we did lots of playing and swapping of boats, with people trying out play moves where they could.
The beginners seemed to do well and the smiling faces said it all! |

It was a good weekend, no water in the river and no surf but lots of sunshine on Saturday and a chilled day on the beach was really nice. Most of the guys went for a paddle along the coast though Graham and Paul opted for the sunbathing bit.
The Wilks Head is open again and the new owners are very generous. The food was something else as there was enough each day to feed twice the amount of people and still have a doggy bag big enough to feed a team of huskies.
Sunday was spent coaching whitewater and slalom skills and trying out new boats. Paul introduced Fraser and Finlay to C1 and let them take his boat to Loddon the following day. (Finlay is naturally a lefty so he and Fraser could make a C2 crew).
The new slalom K1 is really nice, it goes like a rocket. |

Canoe Safety Test at Aquasports - Sunday 24 June 2007
horrible weather, chilly, nasty.... but 7 brave candidates survived a physically and mentally demanding day and passed. The cold water got the better of some of the candidates, who will be assessed on another date.

Slalom, slalom, slalom - all around the country!!! - Summer 2007
The Tandridge Blades slalom squad are becoming a force to contend with.... their recent regular practice and attendance at competitions means that they have rapidly progressed from beginner level with frequent promotions. We now have paddlers in Div 2 and 3 with respectable rankings. They have been noticed by the BCU and we're on the receiving end of 4 new junior slalom boats, plus plenty of coaching support. Track them on www.canoeslalom.co.uk and choose "rankings" then Div 2 or Div 3
This could be you!! They all started last September as beginners. Contact us if you'd like to get involved.
